If like me, you have had someone mention
to you in passing about how they paid $1500 for 5-yards of cloth for Aso ebi
yes, in dollars, and yes, in Nigeria; then like me also, you are permitted to
let out a loud scoff when, on your way home from work, you heard some hawker
say ‘6yards, N500’ in Oshodi.
LOL… the first thing that came to my
mind was “SIX YARDS!!! I can totally make 3 gorgeous outfits out of 6yards o. but
N500???? No be only wash hin go wash, It will tear to shreds before I even manage to get it to a tailor”.
I like to be under-estimated! Yeah you
heard me. Or well, you read me…lol.
We were taught in high school, or even
primary school to ‘never judge a book by
its cover’. But could you please raise your hand if you have ever judged a
book by its cover, a movie by its title (Olympus has fallen was definitely a
better movie than white house down, I’m sorry if you feel otherwise), a man by
his blings/rides/watches or lack of them, a woman by her laid edges/fleeking
make-up/piercings/outfit????
My hands have been so UP they are
aching right now.
I saw a movie last week with a couple
of my goons. The guy who was the deadliest of the terrorists,
happened to be the most
handsome and he definitely had more American + Naija + Caribbean swag than….who now? You know, it was all lovey
lovey, cool dude newly married to a fly chic… till we (the watchers of the movie) discovered he was a terrorist and even when
we did discover, at first we kinda felt “awwwwwww….maybe he was just roped,
he’s too cute to be an actual killer” NA LIEEEEEEEEE… That guy was a terrorist
in e v e r y right, he earned and owned that title!
Do you catch my drift?
We live in a very
superficial society. It is very easy to fall into the trap of taking things,
people, ideas at face value without taking the time and effort to delve deeper
into them. we all have seen those ammmmazing makeover before and after photos....chaiii.
Literally, you can only tell so much about a book just by looking at
the material used to hold it together. A book with a plain cover and simple
title may be more important, more entertaining, or more useful than a book
bound in a flashier manner.
First impressions are hard to forget,
they say, but you’ll agree with me that everyone has his day(s), so that
someone doesn’t entirely make an earth-shaking first impression doesn’t
entirely mean they are that bad. I, like so many people, have made very very
hasty conclusions on people based on faulty first impressions. Some of those I
totally wrote off after that first-meeting have ended up being really close and
dear people to me.
I have come to realize that the prejudice of deciding
what to do or how to react based solely on outward appearance could cost the
pursuer the chance of a meaningful relationship/investment/decision.
It is however so difficult to change being so
superficial because our sense of vision is very
strong. Therefore, it is easy to fall into the trap of believing that the most
beautiful, shiny, or flashiest object is inherently "better." Only by
maintaining strict self-discipline can we force ourselves to put these
prejudices aside and look deeper into everything we do. Who knows? The better
looking idea, thing, or person may turn out to be a better option for you OR it
may not necessarily be. But you will never know if you always base your
decisions only on what looks the best.
I’m currently new to a certain place
and because of my young pretty face (thank you, thank you, no pictures), I have
been underestimated a lot. I almost gave one lady a dirty stinking slap for
something she said based on an assumption she made. Well, because it’s a new
place and I’m still trying to form tush, I just her THE LOOK instead. Lol.
Someone else barged into my space,
apparently he wasn’t expecting to meet someone there, or at least not someone
like ‘me’; so he said “who are you?”
I told him; “what are you doing here?”
I told him. “how can they bring someone
and just give the person that role, for crying out loud? I hope you can *insert
a technical phrase he thought I won’t understand*”. I smiled at him and
responded in like manner. I can't wait for him to meet the Priscilla Adeboye… *na
brag I dey brag o…lol*
Like I said, I like to be
underestimated, 'cos they make it soooo easy for me to impress them. Ah mean, I'm just rolling my sleeves to get started, and they are already impressed... *wink
Anyhoo, my name is Priscilla Adeboye and I
won’t underestimate you because I’ll really love for you to workkkkkk at
impressing the PIA. Besides, I realllllyyy love surprises.
Unity and faith, Peace and progress.
